New Delhi: This year, Dhanteras shopping has set a new record. According to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), Indians spent nearly ₹1 lakh crore on Dhanteras.
Gold and silver purchases played a major role in this. CAIT reported on Saturday (October 18) that gold and silver sales alone totaled ₹60,000 crore, a 25% increase from last year.

Rajesh Rokde, Chairman, Gem & Jewellery Council of India (GJC), said that Dhanteras 2025 saw a 10-15% decline in volume compared to last year, but there was a sharp jump in the total value.
Despite higher gold and silver prices, smart shopping and early wedding purchases have kept consumers motivated. Gold coins remain in high demand, and sales of hallmark-certified lightweight jewelry are also strong.
This year, gold became costlier by ₹53,422 and silver by ₹83,213.
The price of gold has increased by ₹53,422 (70.14%) so far this year. On December 31, 2024, 10 grams of 24-carat gold was priced at ₹76,162, which has now risen to ₹1,29,584.
The price of silver has also increased by ₹83,213 (96.74%) during this period. The price of one kilogram of silver was ₹86,017 on December 31, 2024, and now it has risen to ₹1,69,230 per kilogram.
Utensils and kitchen appliances worth ₹15,000 crore sold
Apart from gold and silver, utensils and kitchen appliances worth ₹15,000 crore, electronics and electrical goods worth ₹10,000 crore and decoration and puja items worth ₹3,000 crore were sold on Dhanteras.
GST cut boosts demand and spending
CAIT Secretary General and MP Praveen Khandelwal said that the reduction in GST rates and PM Narendra Modi’s campaign to promote ‘local products’ helped in increasing spending.
“People are preferring Indian products, which is benefiting small traders, artisans, and manufacturers,” he said. Traditional markets, jewelry markets, local shops, as well as modern shopping malls, saw a large crowd of customers on Dhanteras.
Maruti sold 51,000 cars, Hyundai sales up 20% from last year
Deliveries this Dhanteras were strong, higher than last year, thanks to lower retail prices due to the GST cut. Maruti Suzuki’s Senior Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Partho Banerjee said that 51,000 units are expected to be sold, up from 42,000 last year.
Meanwhile, Hyundai expects deliveries of 14,000 units, a 20% increase. Mercedes-Benz also saw improved deliveries compared to last year and strong order bookings for Diwali.
