All 23 districts reel under floods: Punjab officially declared disaster-affected state

Heavy rains have affected all 23 districts and over 1200 villages of Punjab. Looking at the grappling situation, the Punjab Government has officially declared the state as ‘disaster hit’.  This has activated emergency responses under the Disaster Management Act, 2025.

In an order issued by Chief Secretary KAP Sinha, deputy commissioners have been empowered to act on their own in case of any threatening disaster situation and be prepared for an emergency. All 23 districts of Punjab are currently facing floods. Heavy rains are continuously occurring at many places, due to which the Meteorological Department has issued yellow and red alerts for today.

Heavy monsoon rains, coupled with the release of waters from dams, have caused extensive flooding in many districts of Punjab. With the situation still evolving, there is a grave concern that conditions may further deteriorate in the coming days. Punjab Chief Secretary KAP Sinha exercising powers conferred under sub section (e) of Section 24 of the Act  directed that the District Magistrates may issue all requisite orders under Section 34 of the Act.

All DDMAS shall take prompt and adequate measures to provide relief to the affected population. The PWD, Water Resources Department, and PSPCL  have been directed to take urgent measures to restore their respective services on a war footing.
