Divyastra-MK1: New Source of Strength for Indian Army

Since assuming power, the current government has taken up the mantle of transforming the Indian Army. The aim is to shift the force from a purely defensive posture to an offensive one, capable of penetrating enemy territory to teach adversaries a lesson. Such enhanced strike capability might even compel hostile neighbors to mend their ways—though, for now, that remains a distant prospect.

Given the entrenched presence of Pakistan and China along our borders, mere rhetoric will not suffice; instead, strengthening the Indian Army is essential. Consequently, during the Modi era—spanning nearly a decade and a half—India has taken decisive steps to make the Army self-reliant. The situation has evolved to the point where India is now exporting defense equipment to smaller nations. Advisory committees are actively working to equip the Army with a new asset: the Divyastra-MK1. This system will bolster border surveillance and enhance the capability to execute precision strikes against the enemy. The Divyastra-MK1 is a fully indigenous loitering munition drone designed to gather intelligence, monitor for infiltrations, and engage targets using available resources. It integrates all these military capabilities into a single platform. Thus, despite being an indigenous product, the Divyastra-MK1 represents a significant force multiplier and a game-changer. This technology was utilized in ‘Operation Sindoor’ and is also being employed in the conflict between the US and Iran.

Drawing inspiration from this, the Divyastra-MK1 is set to be deployed across the entire border. The Indian Army had long sought such a capability, and it has now been realized. A key advantage of this weapon is its ability to be launched rapidly from a mobile launcher. It can fly for five hours, covering a distance of 500 kilometers at a speed of 400 kilometers per hour. It can carry a 15-kilogram bomb and remain airborne for five hours to assess the aftermath of the strike. This means the drone can carry the 15-kilogram bomb and, after targeting the enemy, conduct surveillance for five hours to observe the damage inflicted on enemy territory and capture images. This capability includes loitering in the air until the target is engaged. It appears to be a formidable weapon. At a time when the US and Iran are engaged in drone warfare, why shouldn’t the Indian Army also be equipped with such drone capabilities to teach the enemy a befitting lesson
