Two Cloudbursts Trigger Flash Floods in J&K’s Doda, Roads Washed Away and Villages Cut Off

Jammu: The flash floods washed away several roads, isolating many villages from the rest of Doda district. The Thathri-Kilhotran road was among the worst affected, with large amounts of debris burying the road and bringing traffic to a complete halt. Commuters remained stranded on both sides for several hours due to the absence of an alternate route.

Officials said the damaged roads also raised concerns over the movement of ambulances and emergency services in case of medical emergencies.

Food Stocks Damaged in Floodwaters

Significant damage was also reported in the Bhatiyas area, where floodwaters entered a government food storage depot and destroyed stored food grains. Local residents estimated that food stocks equivalent to two to three truckloads were damaged after being submerged under floodwater and debris.

No Casualties Reported

Despite widespread damage to infrastructure and disruption of normal life, officials said no loss of life has been reported so far. However, local residents alleged that road clearance operations were delayed, increasing the hardship for stranded travellers and villagers.

Local youth, transporters, and volunteers assisted stranded passengers, helped regulate traffic, and supported people affected by the blocked roads until restoration work began.

Chenab River on High Alert

Meanwhile, continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas has caused the Chenab River to rise to nearly one metre above the danger mark. The district administration has issued a high alert and advised residents living near the riverbanks to avoid unnecessary movement and stay away from vulnerable areas.

Restoration Work Underway

Officials said restoration teams have been deployed to clear debris and reopen blocked roads. The administration is closely monitoring the weather, warning that fresh rainfall could trigger additional landslides and flash floods in the district.
