A Doll’s Funeral: Gaza’s Youngest Carry the Weight of War as Children Play With Grief

A video shared by a Palestinian content creator captures a moment that is difficult to watch without pausing. In a displacement camp in Gaza, five young children carry out a funeral procession—but not in the way one might expect.

There are no elders, no prayers, no rituals. Instead, the children themselves carry a small, makeshift stretcher.

Resting on it is a doll.

They move slowly and carefully, lifting it over their heads and shoulders. This is not imagination at play—it is imitation of reality. In a place where loss has become routine, even children begin to mirror what they see: death, grief, and farewell.

When Grief Becomes Play

At an age meant for games and laughter, these children are enacting funerals. What should have been moments of innocence—playing with toys, running freely—are replaced with scenes of mourning.

The doll they carry represents more than just a toy. It stands in for the people they have lost, the funerals they have witnessed, and emotions they are too young to fully understand, yet already carry within them.

The Toll on Gaza’s Children

Gaza remains under a fragile ceasefire agreed upon last October, following two years of intense conflict triggered by the October 7, 2023 attack. Despite the pause in fighting, the humanitarian situation remains dire.

According to UNICEF, children and families across Gaza continue to endure severe and overlapping hardships. Essential systems that once sustained daily life have been largely destroyed, leaving behind overwhelming humanitarian needs. Violations against children remain widespread, while the deep psychological impact of the conflict has created an urgent demand for mental health support.

Hunger and Interrupted Futures

Malnutrition is one of the most pressing threats facing children in Gaza. Many are growing up without access to adequate or nutritious food, putting them at risk of long-term health issues.

Education has also been severely disrupted. Schools—many now serving as shelters for displaced families—have been repeatedly affected by attacks, leaving countless children without consistent access to learning.

A Devastating Human Cost

The scale of loss has been immense. More than 75,000 people were reported killed during the first 16 months of the conflict—significantly higher than earlier official figures.

Between October 2023 and January 2025, around 42,200 women, children, and elderly individuals lost their lives, accounting for over half of all violent deaths in Gaza during that period.

Falling Life Expectancy

A separate study released in November 2025 estimated that over 78,000 people were killed between October 2023 and the end of 2024. It also revealed a dramatic decline in life expectancy—dropping by 44% in 2023 and a further 47% in 2024—highlighting the long-term consequences of the conflict.
