Drinking water crisis in Hansi’s Chanaut; villagers to begin fast-unto-death today following 25-day sit-in protest

Villagers in Chanaut (Hansi), who have been staging a sit-in protest for 25 days against the drinking water crisis, have announced that they will begin an indefinite hunger strike starting Tuesday. MP Deepender Hooda visited the protest site on Monday to extend his support to the villagers’ agitation.

Hooda stated that providing clean drinking water without discrimination is the government’s primary responsibility. He added that if the government fails to provide a solution, the issue would be raised in both the Legislative Assembly and the Lok Sabha.

MP Deepender noted that the region’s villages have been facing a water shortage for the past 12 years, and the government’s apathy in this situation is unfortunate. While he welcomed the laying of water pipelines for Hansi city, he emphasized that water supply should not be viewed through a city-versus-village lens. He also demanded the withdrawal of cases registered against the villagers participating in the protest.

Criticizing the economic policies of both the central and state governments, Deepender Hooda pointed out that the prices of LPG cylinders, petrol, diesel, and fertilizers are skyrocketing, placing an ever-increasing burden of inflation on the common people.

He also accused the government of discrimination regarding permissions for protests at Jantar Mantar, noting that while some organizations are granted permission, the Congress party, farmers, and female wrestlers have been denied it. Anoop Singh Chanaut, a member of the protest committee, stated that the indefinite hunger strike would commence on Tuesday; 27 villagers have consented to participate, with five of them set to undertake the fast.
