Chandigarh: A Chandigarh Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Daljit Singh, allegedly drove his car while heavily intoxicated on the wrong side of a one-way road on Thursday. His speeding vehicle rammed into nearly 10 cars and bikes over a 500-metre stretch, leaving several people injured.
Rampage Ends, Public Outrage Ensues
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred on the Bird Wala–Cambwala single road. The car’s rampage ended after a head-on collision with a school bus, shattering its windshield and leaving the ASI with facial injuries. Fortunately, no pedestrians or cyclists were on the road.
Local residents immediately surrounded the ASI, who allegedly misbehaved instead of accepting responsibility. Videos of the altercation went viral, prompting residents to alert the Police Control Room.
A PCR team arrived shortly after. A woman officer tried to pull the ASI from the car, but he refused. Male personnel eventually removed him as he struggled to walk due to intoxication.
No Action Yet by Police
Despite viral videos and public outrage, Chandigarh Police has not taken any official action against ASI Daljit Singh, even as locals repeatedly reprimanded him for endangering lives.
