Various reasons for road accidents in mountainous areas
Poor geographical conditions, human negligence, and infrastructure problems are considered to be the main causes of road accidents in the mountainous areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sharp turns, poor visibility, and steep slopes on mountainous roads make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles. In districts like Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, and Poonch, many roads pass along deep ravines. In these areas, even a minor slip or collision can lead to a serious accident.
Furthermore, roads in many rural and high-altitude areas are narrow, making it difficult for vehicles to cross them. The lack of crash barriers, parapets, and proper road signs in many areas also increases the risk of accidents.
Potholes, erosion of curbs, and poor drainage systems also create difficulties for drivers. Speeding and rash overtaking on mountainous roads are also among the major causes of road accidents.
