Durgapur Gang-Rape Victim’s Father Seeks CBI Probe, Cites Doubts Over Police Investigation

Kolkata: The father of the Durgapur gang-rape victim on Wednesday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the case, expressing doubts over the ongoing state police investigation and calling for exemplary punishment for the accused.

Father Says CBI Probe Will Ensure Justice

Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, the victim’s father said he had been consistently urging for stringent action against those responsible.
“I have repeatedly demanded punishment for the culprits. The police investigation has made progress, but I still have doubts,” he said.
“If there is a CBI investigation, it will be a better probe. It will help ensure exemplary punishment and faster justice,” he added.

NCW Flags Gross Negligence by West Bengal Police

The father’s demand comes a day after the National Commission for Women (NCW), in its fact-finding report, criticized the handling of the case by West Bengal Police, highlighting serious procedural lapses.

The report stated that as of October 12, the crime scene had not been cordoned off, creating the possibility of evidence tampering, and that no proper forensic examination had been conducted.
“These serious procedural lapses indicate gross negligence on the part of the local investigating authorities,” the NCW observed in its findings.

Police Say Probe on Right Track

Responding to the concerns, Sunil Choudhary, Commissioner of Police, Asansol–Durgapur Police Commissionerate, said that the victim’s family was being assisted “in every possible way” and that the investigation was “progressing in the right direction.”

Six Arrested, Including Victim’s Male Friend

So far, six individuals have been arrested, including Wasif Ali, the victim’s male friend, who accompanied her on the night of the crime.
According to police, Ali was detained after investigators noticed inconsistencies in his statements during questioning.

The other five accused, arrested earlier based on the victim’s complaint, remain in police custody.
Ali is expected to be produced before a court later on Wednesday, where police will seek his custodial remand.

Incident Overview

The shocking incident occurred last Friday, when a second-year medical student from Odisha was gang-raped by five men in a forested area near a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur, West Burdwan district.

The case has triggered widespread outrage, with women’s rights groups demanding accountability and stronger measures to ensure safety for students in the region.
