E-bus service to start in Amritsar from 2026; Tender worth Rs 3.63 crore issued

Amritsar has taken a significant step towards modernising and improving public transport. Under the Pradhan Mantri e-Bus Seva Yojana (PM-E-Bus Service) scheme, 100 new electric buses will be operational on the city’s roads starting next year. This was announced in the Punjab Budget 2025, and implementation is now underway.

The Municipal Corporation has completed the necessary land selection process to implement this plan. According to officials, infrastructure for e-buses will be developed at a total cost of ₹3.63 crore, including bus depots, charging stations, and maintenance facilities. The plan aims to make public transport more environmentally friendly and modern.

According to Amritsar Mayor Moti Bhatia and corporation officials, e-buses will replace conventional diesel buses on several routes in the city to reduce pollution and provide better passenger convenience.

E-buses will be prioritized on the city’s congested routes, especially on the Wall City’s outer ring road. The plan also includes connecting the airport to the Golden Temple, the railway station, and the bus stand. Additionally, buses are planned to operate on routes from Golden Gate to India Gate and from Verka to the airport.

The buses will be equipped with modern technology, including GPS tracking, panic buttons, and cameras. The first phase will be completed early next year, and approximately 40 buses will be deployed. Bus maintenance and charging infrastructure are also being developed.
