Delhi Government Major Decision: E-Rickshaw Registrations to be Issued Only in the Names of Individual Drivers

The Delhi Transport Department has taken a significant decision. The department has withdrawn the circular it issued on April 21, 2022. This circular had previously allowed companies and firms to register multiple e-carts and e-rickshaws in their own names. Now, registration will be carried out in the name of individual drivers, with the process set to commence on May 15.

This decision has been taken to safeguard the interests of individual e-rickshaw drivers. Its objective is to curb corporate monopolies. The government aims to empower thousands of underprivileged drivers. This move will ensure that the benefits of e-rickshaw registration reach a wider section of the population in the capital, Delhi.

It will prevent the concentration of ownership rights in the hands of just a few companies or firms. The government’s primary goal is to promote self-employment. It also aims to reduce the exploitation of economically weaker sections of society. Furthermore, this initiative will strengthen the backbone of the city’s ‘last-mile connectivity.’

This decision will open up better economic opportunities for owner-drivers. It will mitigate the risk of a single entity dominating the e-rickshaw sector. It entails enhanced support for a self-reliant employment model. Thousands of individual drivers will be empowered to maintain their independence, ensuring they do not remain mere employees of large-scale operators.

Delhi’s Transport Minister, Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, shared his views on this initiative. He stated that this decision reinforces our commitment to ensuring equal livelihood opportunities. By placing the vehicle back in the hands of the individual driver, self-employment is being significantly empowered. This measure serves to protect the very backbone of Delhi’s last-mile connectivity.
