Earthquake in Jammu & Kashmir: Tremors felt as 4.2 magnitude quake jolts Doda district

J&K: A 4.2 magnitude earthquake was felt in the remote mountainous areas of Doda district around 1:25 a.m. on Sunday.

The sudden tremor panicked people and they rushed out of their homes. Local administration officials confirmed the earthquake and said that tremors were felt throughout the region, although there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.

As morning dawned, people came out to check the condition of their homes and surrounding areas and breathed a sigh of relief that the mountain villages were safe.

Earthquake Epicenter and Depth

According to the India Meteorological Department, the epicenter of the earthquake was recorded at latitude 33.08 degrees north and longitude 76.17 degrees east. The depth of the earthquake was only 5 kilometers, making the tremors more intense.

According to experts, the Doda Valley falls in a sensitive geographical area and is prone to landslides during the monsoon season.

No Damage; Administration Appeals Vigilance

So far, no injuries, building collapses, or damage to infrastructure have been reported. The administration has urged people to stay away from slopes and vulnerable hilly areas and to be alert for possible aftershocks.

Relief teams are assessing the area. The administration said that awareness and early warning systems need to be strengthened in the face of disasters like earthquakes.
