Earthquakes Jolt Himachal, Assam and Rajasthan; No Casualties Reported

New Delhi:  Mild earthquakes were reported in different parts of the country on Monday, with tremors felt in Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Rajasthan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

In Himachal Pradesh, an earthquake of magnitude 3.9 struck the Kangra region late Monday evening. The quake, recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres, triggered brief tremors in the district, though no damage to life or property has been reported so far.

Earlier in the day, Assam’s Nagaon district was hit by a 4.3 magnitude earthquake at around 12.09 pm. The epicenter was located nearly 40 kilometres from Tezpur, with tremors recorded at a depth of 35 kilometres. The NCS confirmed the details in a post on social media platform X.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, August 17, an earthquake of 3.1 magnitude was reported in Churu district of Rajasthan. The tremors were recorded around 5:30 pm at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Seismologists note that earthquakes of magnitude less than 5.0 are generally considered minor, with low potential for causing serious damage. India, however, remains seismically active, particularly in the Himalayan and northeastern regions.
