New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) has sent a notice to senior Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera after discovering that he allegedly holds two Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) registered in separate constituencies of Delhi.
Two Voter IDs Detected
According to the notice issued by the New Delhi Electoral Officer, Khera’s name appears in the electoral rolls for both New Delhi and Jangpura Assembly constituencies. The document includes images of both voter ID cards and cites violation of rules against registering in more than one constituency.
BJP’s Allegations and Political Response
The controversy surfaced after BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya posted photographs from the electoral rolls of the two constituencies on X, claiming that Khera holds two active EPIC numbers. Malviya linked the matter to past allegations against Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi’s voter registration timeline.
Khera Denies Wrongdoing, Blames EC
Khera, who heads the Congress media and publicity department and has been vocal against alleged voter fraud, dismissed the BJP’s claims. He argued that the matter exposed systemic failures within the Election Commission, reiterating the party’s demand for greater transparency in electoral processes.
Larger Context of ‘Vote Theft’ Debate
The Congress leader maintained that whether the questions come from BJP figures or his own party, they ultimately point to flaws in the EC’s functioning. He cited examples such as demands for machine-readable voter lists in Varanasi and booth-wise CCTV footage in Maharashtra, which he said remain unmet, reinforcing his charge of “vote theft.”
