ECI Deadline Ends Today in Battle for Trinamool Name and Symbol

Kolkata: The deadline for the two rival factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to submit documents to the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the party’s name and election symbol ends at 5.30 p.m. on Monday, marking a crucial stage in the ongoing political battle.

The dispute is between the faction led by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, and the rival faction led by expelled party legislator Ritabrata Banerjee.

Rival Factions Present Claims Before ECI

Following the submission of documents by both camps, the ECI will examine their claims before deciding which faction will retain the Trinamool Congress name, election symbol and party funds.

The faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has claimed majority support in the party’s legislative wing in the West Bengal Assembly as well as in the newly constituted National Working Committee, which replaced Mamata Banerjee with senior legislator Arup Roy as the party’s national chairperson.

On the other hand, the Mamata Banerjee-led faction has argued that legislators elected on Trinamool Congress tickets cannot later claim ownership of the party’s name and symbol.

The faction has also maintained that the new National Working Committee constituted by the rebel group is invalid since Mamata Banerjee was elected the party’s national chairperson for life at the Trinamool Congress convention in February 2022, attended by delegates from across the country.

Mamata Banerjee Voices Concern

Amid the legal battle, Mamata Banerjee has expressed concern over the possibility of losing control of the party’s election symbol.

In a live social media address on Saturday, she alleged that the rebel faction’s objective was to take control of the party’s name, symbol and funds.

She, however, asserted that even if the Election Commission ruled against her faction, the support of party workers and the people would remain with her.

The Election Commission is expected to examine the submissions from both factions before delivering its decision on the ownership of the Trinamool Congress name and election symbol.
