Chandigarh: In a significant development just days before the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has suspended Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Ravjot Kaur Grewal.
The suspension comes as the district prepares for polling on November 11, 2025. While the Election Commission has not yet disclosed the specific reasons behind the action, sources indicate that it may be linked to ensuring a free, fair, and impartial electoral process.
Suspension with Immediate Effect
The Commission has ordered her suspension with immediate effect.
According to reports, Amritsar CP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar (IPS) has been appointed as the additional SSP of Tarn Taran in his place. Voting for the Tarn Taran by-election will take place on November 11th, with results declared on November 14th.
It should be noted that just a day earlier, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had filed a complaint with the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Sibin C, against SSP Dr. Ravjot Kaur Grewal. In the complaint, Dr. Ravjot Kaur Grewal was accused of acting as a puppet of the Aam Aadmi Party and filing false cases against Akali Dal workers and arresting them.
Akali Dal President Sukhbir Badal had demanded the transfer of SSP Dr. Ravjot Kaur Grewal and two DSPs. It is believed that these complaints led to this action.

- Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, accompanied by party candidate Principal Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa and senior leaders, alleged that SSP Dr. Ravjot Kaur Grewal, SP (Detective) Rippurpan Singh, and CIA staff in-charge Prabhjit Singh were abusing their official positions to conduct illegal raids on Akali workers.
- Principal Randhawa said that Akali Dal councilor from Ward No. 14, Sham Singh, Sarpanch Varinder Singh, and former Sarpanch Balwinder Singh were illegally detained. They were threatened with false cases if they did not support Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu. They were taken away from the constituency by police teams from different districts.
- These threats are being made under the leadership of SSP Dr. Ravjot Kaur. He also stated that the SSP had previously filed a false case against his daughter, Kanchanpreet, and others, in which they had received interim relief from the court.
- The complaint alleges that Dr. Ravjot Grewal and two other officers, including a personal assistant to the SSP, who is said to be a relative, are making every effort to support the AAP candidate.
- The Akali Dal alleged that such blatant partisan attitude violates the rules of the police force during elections and creates the impression that free and fair elections are impossible as long as these officers remain in office. The complaint also noted that SP Rippurpan Singh and Inspector Prabhjit Singh have been posted in Tarn Taran for a long time.
