Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the Union Budget 2026–27, unveiled a series of major initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s education ecosystem, with a sharp focus on youth empowerment, inclusivity, skilling, and future-ready learning. Education reforms form a key pillar of the Budget’s three “Kartavyas”, centered on growth, aspirations, and Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.

Here are the Top 10 Education Announcements in Budget 2026:

1. Five University Townships to Be Established

The government will set up five large university townships across India to promote multidisciplinary learning, research excellence, and global academic collaboration.

2. Girls’ Hostels in Every District

To improve female education access and safety, the Centre announced the construction of girls’ hostels in every district, especially benefiting students from rural and aspirational regions.

3. Expansion of Digital and AI-Based Learning

The Budget promotes technology-driven education, with expanded use of AI-enabled learning tools, digital classrooms, and personalized learning platforms across schools and higher education institutions.

4. Skill Development Through SAMARTH 2.0

SAMARTH 2.0 will modernize skill-based education, focusing on industry-relevant training through stronger academia–industry partnerships.

5. Regional Centre’s of Excellence for Youth Training

New regional training institutes will be set up as centers of excellence to develop skilled manpower, particularly aligned with infrastructure, logistics, and emerging sectors.

6. Focus on Education in Tier-2 and Tier-3 Cities

The Centre will continue investing in education infrastructure in cities with populations above 5 lakhs, strengthening access to quality education beyond metros.

7. Strengthening Research and Innovation Ecosystem

Budget 2026 emphasizes research-led education, encouraging innovation hubs, research grants, and global academic collaborations in universities.

8. Inclusion and Access for Underprivileged Students

Special measures have been proposed to ensure education access for SCs, STs, minorities, and economically weaker sections, aligning with the government’s inclusive growth agenda.

9. Digital Public Infrastructure for Education

The government will enhance digital public infrastructure to support online education delivery, student databases, and seamless academic administration.

10. Youth-Centric Education Aligned with ‘Viksit Bharat’

Calling the Budget “inspired by youth power,” Sitharaman said education reforms will help build capacity, employability, and leadership skills, making young Indians partners in the journey towards Viksit Bharat.

FM Sitharaman underlined that education plays a central role in fulfilling the three Kartavyas:
