Egypt Train Collision: Four Killed, 88 Injured in Giza as Death Toll Feared to Rise

Cairo: At least four people were killed and 88 others injured after two trains collided in Egypt’s Giza province on Sunday, authorities said. The death toll is feared to rise as rescue and emergency response efforts continue.

The collision occurred in the al-Ayyat district, around 52 kilometres south of Cairo. According to Egypt’s Transportation Ministry, a train travelling towards the southwestern Fayoum province crashed into the rear of another train heading to the southern province of Aswan.

One of the trains derailed in the collision, although the ministry did not specify which train was involved.

Egyptian President Orders Probe Into Train Collision

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said he was closely monitoring the aftermath of the accident and had ordered an immediate investigation to establish the circumstances behind the collision and hold those responsible accountable.

In a post on X, the President expressed condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“I am following the aftermath of the train collision with great concern and extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, along with my sincere wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured,” he said.

He added that he had directed state agencies to provide the necessary medical care, promptly investigate the circumstances of the accident and take action against anyone found to have been negligent.

Previous Train Collision Reported in Same District

The al-Ayyat district has witnessed another train collision in the past. In September last year, a train driver and his assistant were injured after two freight trains collided in the same area.

The latest accident has once again raised concerns over railway safety in Egypt, where authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to Sunday’s collision.

Similar Incident: 69 Killed in Spain Train Collision

In a separate incident reported earlier last month, at least 69 people were killed when two high-speed trains collided in Spain’s central province of Toledo.

The accident involved two trains travelling in the same direction. One reportedly struck the rear of the other, causing two coaches to leave the tracks, according to The Associated Press, which cited Spanish broadcaster TVE.

The exact circumstances leading to the collision were not immediately clear, and authorities had not provided a complete account of how the trains came into contact or confirmed the full number of passengers affected.

The collision also disrupted rail connectivity across parts of central and southern Spain. Rail infrastructure operator ADIF said services had been suspended on routes connecting Madrid with Ciudad Real and Andalusia, affecting passengers travelling between the Spanish capital and destinations farther south.
