Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains: 8 in 6 Months, 12 This Year

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has unveiled an ambitious timeline for the rollout of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains the long-distance overnight variant of India’s popular semi-high-speed trains. According to the minister, eight Vande Bharat Sleeper services are expected to be operational within the next six months, and a total of 12 such trains will be introduced across the country by the end of 2026.

First Vande Bharat Sleeper Set to Launch in January

The first Vande Bharat Sleeper train will begin service this month, with the Kolkata–Guwahati route earmarked as the inaugural run. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the service in the second half of January, marking a milestone in the Indian Railways’ modernization drive.

Features and Passenger Comfort Enhanced

These 16-coach fully air-conditioned trains are designed for comfortable overnight travel, featuring ergonomic berths, advanced safety systems like Kavach anti-collision technology, automatic doors, and modern interiors. Ticket prices are expected to remain competitive, with fares aimed at being affordable for middle-class travellers.

Boost to Connectivity and Rail Modernization

The introduction of sleeper Vande Bharat trains expands the railways’ portfolio beyond daytime chair-car services to long-distance overnight journeys, enhancing connectivity between key regions. Officials say this service will not only improve travel comfort but also provide a strong alternative to air travel for many routes.
