Chandigarh: Electricity consumers in Chandigarh will have to pay more for power starting November 1, as the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has approved a 0.94% hike in tariffs. According to the new order, power rates will increase by 5 to 10 paise per unit across various categories, marking the first revision since the privatization of the city’s power distribution.
For domestic consumers (LTDS-II), the rate for up to 100 units has been increased from ₹2.80 to ₹2.85 per unit, while consumption between 101 and 200 units will now cost ₹3.80 instead of ₹3.75. The revised tariff structure will come into force from November 1.
JERC has also approved progressive increases of 3.86%, 7.21%, 9.29%, and 11.10% for subsequent years. The revision comes after Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL), the city’s private power distributor, submitted a proposal seeking a 7.57% hike in tariffs.
A CPDL spokesperson described the decision as a balanced move, stating that this is the company’s first tariff order since privatization. “We fully understand our responsibilities and, in coordination with the UT Administration and JERC, are committed to improving reliability, reducing technical losses, and enhancing consumer services,” the spokesperson said.
The latest hike follows an average tariff increase of 9.4% implemented from August 1, 2024. Earlier, in the financial year 2022–23, a marginal rise of 25 paise per unit—about 9.09%—was introduced for the 0 to 150-unit slab.
The new rates are expected to slightly raise monthly electricity bills for both domestic and commercial users, though officials maintain that the increase is necessary to cover rising operational and infrastructure costs.
This marks the first major tariff revision since Chandigarh’s power sector was privatized, signaling a shift toward cost-reflective pricing and performance-driven distribution in the Union Territory.
