Moga Encounter: Police nabs notorious criminal Baba, arms and ammunition recovered

The breakthrough came when he was tracked to Dehradun, arrested, and brought back to Punjab.

Moga: An intense encounter unfolded in Moga when the police team, led by SSP Ajay Gandhi, captured Sunil Kumar alias Baba, a fugitive wanted in over 17 serious criminal cases, including attempted murder and violations under the NDPS Act. Kumar had previously fled after killing two brothers.

The breakthrough came when he was tracked to Dehradun, arrested, and brought back to Punjab. During interrogation, Baba disclosed the location of hidden firearms. When the police escorted him to recover the weapons, he opened fire in a bid to escape. The police retaliated, injuring him in the leg. Baba is now stable after receiving medical care, and no officers sustained significant injuries during the operation.

Recovered from the site were two firearms and live rounds, adding to the arsenal that authorities believe he used in his string of violent crimes. This development links Kumar to potential gang affiliations, with the investigation delving deeper into his network and its operations.

Baba is anticipated to be tied with high-profile gang rivalries between the Bambiha and Bishnoi groups, known for their extensive criminal undertakings in Punjab. These connections are under scrutiny, given the increasing frequency of inter-gang clashes, extortion, and violent crimes in the region.
