Mumbai: Singer Jasleen Royal has addressed the backlash she received following her performance as the opening act for Coldplay’s concert in Mumbai. In a recently released mini-documentary titled Dare To Dream, she reflects on the experience, revealing the emotional toll it took on her. The video captures behind-the-scenes moments at the DY Patil Stadium, showing Jasleen seeking clarity on a technical issue that affected her in-ear monitors during the performance. A team member can be seen apologising and assuring her that the problem was not on her end, but technical.
The documentary also highlights Jasleen’s vulnerable moments as she opens up about the pressure of performing at such a massive event. Breaking down in front of her team, she admits the criticism was overwhelming, saying, “There’s a lot of pressure. I’ll die; I swear I’ll die.” She also shared her fears about public perception, adding that as a self-taught musician, she is constantly learning and trying to improve. “I know I’m not perfect,” she said, “but I don’t want people to think I didn’t deserve to be there.”
Jasleen’s performance was met with harsh criticism from some industry figures, including composer Vishal Dadlani, singer Antara Mitra and filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri. Vishal Dadlani commented publicly, “When you put a basic-to-bad singer in front of a large crowd on a large stage, all you’re doing is showing more people that the individual can’t really sing.” He went on to blame the Indian music industry’s system for failing to promote quality talent, calling the situation “embarrassing” for all involved.
