Chennai: Actress and politician Kushboo Sundar has shared her views on the dominance of male superstars in cinema, acknowledging that women-led films still have a long way to go. Speaking at the Mookuthi Amman 2 muhurat ceremony in Chennai, she emphasised that while films like Aranmanai 4 and Mookuthi Amman 2 are significant, they remain exceptions rather than the norm.

“I’m not going to mince my words and say times have changed. Women-oriented films don’t always have the space to become blockbusters,” she remarked. Kushboo highlighted how theatrical success remains largely tied to megastars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan. “The big screen is still about the Khans, the superstars, and Ulaganayagan. We have a long way to go,” she asserted.

However, she praised the opportunities emerging on OTT platforms, noting that actresses like Dimple Kapadia, Huma Qureshi, and others have thrived in digital content. She expressed her own interest in making an OTT debut soon. “With streaming, women have far more space to explore diverse roles,” she said, citing projects like Darlings, City of Dreams, and Maharani.

Kushboo also stressed that women in the industry should have the right to choose their work without judgment. “Rather than waiting for content-driven cinema, actresses should be free to do commercial films for fun. It’s okay to be part of a ‘jhamela’ once in a while and simply enjoy yourself,” she added.
