New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the passing of celebrated folk singer Sharda Sinha.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha ji. Her Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs have enjoyed immense popularity for decades. The resonance of her beautiful songs associated with the revered festival of Chhath will forever linger. Her passing is an irreplaceable loss for the music world. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family and fans during this difficult time. Om Shanti,” PM Modi shared on X.

Sharda Sinha, aged 72, passed away on Tuesday due to complications from cancer. She had recently been admitted to AIIMS in Delhi and was placed on a ventilator as her condition worsened.
President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her sadness over the folk singer’s death.
“The news of Dr. Sharda Sinha ji’s passing, a celebrated singer known as Bihar Kokila, is profoundly saddening. She gained tremendous acclaim in the music industry for her enchanting voice in Bihari folk songs in Maithili and Bhojpuri. On this day of Chhath Puja, her melodious songs must be creating a divine atmosphere of devotion both in India and abroad. She was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2018 for her artistic contributions. Her singing will remain eternal. I extend my deepest condolences to her family and fans,” the President wrote on X.
Union Home Minister also expressed his condolences, acknowledging the singer’s impact on Indian music.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Sharda Sinha ji, who elevated Indian music with her melodious voice for over five decades. Known as Bihar Kokila, she popularized Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs and captivated audiences as a playback singer. The folk traditions of Purvanchal feel incomplete without her. On this significant Chhath festival, her voice will surely evoke deep emotions among devotees,” the Home Minister wrote on X.
He added, “My thoughts are with her family during this time of sorrow. May Chhathi Maiya grant a place for her soul at her feet. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti.”
Born on October 1, 1952, in Samastipur, Bihar, Sharda Sinha hailed from a musically inclined family. She began her career with All India Radio and Doordarshan in 1980, quickly gaining fame for her powerful voice and emotive performances.
Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal referred to the late singer as a ‘precious gem.’
“With the loss of Sharda Sinha ji, folk music has lost a true gem. Her melodious voice will forever resonate among us. May Chhathi Maiya grant her a place at her feet and provide strength to her family and loved ones during this challenging time,” Kejriwal wrote on X.
Sharda Sinha, a Padma Bhushan recipient, was celebrated for her contributions to Maithili and Bhojpuri music. Her well-known songs include ‘Vivaah Geet’ and ‘Chhath Geet’. She was also awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan for her musical achievements.
Bihar’s Leader of the Opposition paid tribute, stating, “I was saddened to hear about the death of Smt. Sharda Sinha ji, a beloved daughter of Bihar, who was honored with the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan and brought Chhath Puja to the masses through her beautiful songs.”
He wrote on X, “I pray to God to grant her soul a place at his lotus feet and to provide strength and patience to her family and supporters during this time of grief. Her sweet voice will live on forever. My respects and humble tributes to her. Om Shanti.”
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren also expressed his condolences, highlighting her role in women’s empowerment.
“I received the sad news of the passing of Swar Kokila, the esteemed Sharda Sinha ji, who brought Chhath and other festivals to life with her voice. She was a remarkable example of women’s empowerment. Her departure is an immense loss for the country, one that cannot easily be compensated. May Chhathi Maiya grant peace to her soul and strength to her family during this difficult time,” the Chief Minister wrote on X.
Sharda Sinha touched the hearts of many in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh with her Chhath songs.
Following the announcement of her death, numerous condolence messages flooded social media.
BJP MP from Gorakhpur, Ravi Kishan, stated that the folk singer was a symbol of Bihar’s culture.
“The goddess of voice, the embodiment of our culture, whose presence is essential for Chhath celebrations and marriages, has now been called by Chhathi Maiya. May she find peace in heaven. Om shanti shanti shanti #shardasinha,” Kishan wrote on X.
