Mumbai: Renowned filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj is brimming with excitement over Arjun Ustara, the period drama he is currently working on. Originally planned with the late Irrfan Khan in mind, the film now stars Shahid Kapoor, marking the duo’s fourth collaboration after Kaminey (2009), Haider (2014), and Rangoon (2017).

“Shahid and I are thrilled to be working together again. The shoot has been fantastic,” Bhardwaj shared.

While reuniting with Kapoor is a highlight, the director is equally impressed by Triptii Dimri, with whom he is collaborating for the first time. “Triptii is such a fine actor and an absolute delight to work with,” he said. Additionally, veteran actor Nana Patekar is also part of the project, leaving Bhardwaj wondering why he had never worked with him before.

As a filmmaker who also composes music for his films, Bhardwaj reflected on the evolving role of music in cinema. “There was a time when a hit song guaranteed a film’s success. Then, no matter how good the music was, a film wouldn’t work unless the story was strong. Now, it seems we are back to the trend where hit songs can influence a film’s success. Tauba Tauba from Bad Newz (2024) is often cited as an example—people say the song and its dance step made the film work. I’m not sure if that’s entirely true,” he mused.

With Arjun Ustara shaping up to be a compelling project, Bhardwaj’s excitement suggests that audiences can expect something truly special.
