Massive protest ‘Kale Pani Da Morcha’ held against dumping of toxic waste in Buddha Darya and Sutlej

Ludhiana: A massive protest march ‘Kale Pani Da Morcha’ held in Ludhiana, on Saturday, against the continuous dumping of toxic wastes in the Buddha Darya and Sutlej River. Huge number of residents associated to different NGOs and farmers union along with environmentalists from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan turned up to participate in this protest march.

Ludhiana: A massive protest march ‘Kale Pani Da Morcha’ held in Ludhiana, on Saturday, against the continuous dumping of toxic wastes in the Buddha Darya and Sutlej River.

Huge number of residents associated to different NGOs and farmers union along with environmentalists from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan turned up to participate in this protest march which kicked off from Verka Milk Plant on Ferozepur Road and culminated at Bhai Bala Chowk where the statue of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha is placed.

Peoples hold march with Banners 

The protest march was conducted to awaken the government from deep slumber and the residents sought sincere efforts from the government to stop dumping of toxic waste in Buddha Darya and Sutlej River.

Indian actress Sonia Mann as well as leaders of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha also participated in the march.

Jaskirat Singh, an activist from Naroa Punjab Manch said that the residents of some districts of Punjab and Rajasthan are forced to consume the polluted water because the toxic waste which is being dumped in Buddha Darya finally flows into the Sutlej river and the polluted river water further flows to different district of Punjab and enters the desert state through Punjab’s Indira Gandhi canal.

Massive crowd in March

Kuldeep Khaira said that the impact of consumption of contaminated water is being witnessed as residents are falling ill. Therefore, the residents want freedom from toxic waters and today’s march marks an agitation against the toxic waters of Punjab.

Dr. Darshan Pal said that crores of amounts have been spent to clean Buddha Nullah but the condition is still the same. The government must ensure that if they are spending huge amounts, the results should be visible, otherwise, stern action should be taken against concerned officials.

The team of Kale Pani Da Morcha issued a stern warning to the Punjab government that if illegal industries are not shut down and concrete steps are not taken to halt the pollution of the Sutlej and other rivers within the next two weeks, the activists will be forced to take matters into their own hands after September 15. They made it clear that the government would bear full responsibility for any consequences. The Kala Pani Morcha team, along with all supporting organizations, plans to strategize their next course of action in the coming days.
