EPFO restores Higher Pension Option, Read to know more details

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has restored an earlier pension option under its pension scheme that will benefit a select group of members, clarifying confusion over pension calculations that have persisted since a 2014 rule change.

    What change has been made?

Under the updated provision, eligible subscribers can once again have their pension contributions linked to their actual basic salary and dearness allowance, potentially increasing their retirement payouts.

This reinstates an option that existed before the 2014 amendment, which capped the salary that could be considered for pension calculation at ₹15,000 per month, limiting pension benefits for many workers.

    Who is eligible?

However, the restored benefit will not automatically apply to all EPFO members. It is available only to those employees who had previously opted for the higher pension contribution option before the 2014 cap was introduced, and whose employers agreed to contribute on that basis. Members who did not exercise this option before 2014 are generally not eligible for the restored benefit.

Officials have clarified that the change is a clarification and reinstatement of the earlier rule rather than a completely new scheme.

It aims to ease long-standing uncertainty around pensionable salary caps and help those who had legally chosen higher contributions continue to benefit from them.

Financial experts say this move will provide better pension outcomes for long-term contributors who had higher salaries, but for the broader workforce, the traditional pension calculation under the existing wage ceiling will still apply unless they had exercised the higher contribution option earlier.

Employees and pensioners are advised to check their EPF account details and consult their employer or EPFO regional office to understand whether they qualify for the restored higher pension benefit.
