Ex-Punjab IG Amar Singh Chahal Shoots Himself After Alleged ₹8.10 Crore Online Scam

Patiala: Former Inspector General of Police (IG) Amar Singh Chahal shot himself in Patiala, Punjab. He used his security guard’s revolver for the gun. He was injured in the incident and was immediately admitted to Park Hospital in Patiala.

Before shooting himself, Amar Singh Chahal wrote a 12-page suicide note addressed to Punjab Police Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.

According to police officials, the suicide note mentions an online fraud of ₹8.10 crore. After retiring as IG, Amar Singh Chahal was living in Patiala.

Patiala SSP Varun Sharma stated that upon receiving information about the shooting, police teams immediately reached Amar Singh Chahal’s home.

Joined a WhatsApp group called ‘IPS Group’

In his suicide note, Chahal wrote that he had recently joined a WhatsApp group called ‘IPS Group’. People in this group lured him with promises of high returns on investments. Confident in this, he gradually invested large sums, but later realized the entire scheme was a fraud.

Accused in the Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura shootings

Amar Singh Chahal is an accused in the 2015 Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura shootings in Faridkot. Two people were killed in these incidents. On February 24, 2023, the Punjab Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a charge sheet in the Faridkot court in this case. At that time, this SIT was headed by ADGP L.K. Yadav.

Names of Politicians and Senior Police Officers in the Chargesheet

The chargesheet included the names of several prominent political leaders and senior police officers. These included then-Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, his son and former Home Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal, former DIG Amar Singh Chahal, former SSP Sukhminder Singh Mann, and SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma.
