9.68 lakh families excluded from BPL list in Haryana, uproar during assembly session

Tuesday’s session of the Haryana Assembly witnessed a heated debate and allegations on the issue of BPL cards. The opposition accused the government of adding a large number of names to the BPL list to woo poor families before the elections, and now, after the elections, the same lakhs of families have been excluded from the list.

Congress MLA Sheeshpal Keherwala raised a question in the House and asked how many new BPL cards were made and how many were canceled from January 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025. He also wanted to know what was the basis for canceling the BPL cards.

In response, Development and Panchayat Minister Krishan Lal Panwar said that this process is not one-sided. During this period, a large number of families have been out from the BPL list, while almost the same number of new families have also been added. Presenting the figures in the House, he said that during this period 8,73,507 families were added, while 9,68,506 families were out. The total number of BPL families on March 31, 2025 was 52,37,671, which came down to 41,93,669 by August 22.

BJP took advantage, alleged opposition

On this, the opposition sharply alleged that during the assembly elections, the BJP took political advantage by increasing the number of BPL families and reduced it after the results. The opposition said that the government conducted a secret survey and deprived the poor families of the schemes.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini himself intervened and said that the opposition has spread confusion among the public regarding BPL cards. He clarified that the government has adopted a completely transparent process. People themselves declared their income on the portal, and those whose annual income was more than Rs 1.80 lakh voluntarily got out of the list.
