Faridkot Tragedy: Two Debt-Ridden Farmer Brothers Die by suicide after loan ballooned to ₹50 Lakh

A heart-wrenching incident has come to light near the village of Dhab Brahman Wala located close to Kotkapura in Faridkot district, where two biological farmer brothers, distressed by debt, committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. Upon receiving the information, the railway police arrived at the scene, took custody of both bodies, and sent them to the Medical College Hospital in Faridkot for a post-mortem examination. The police are currently proceeding with further action based on the statements provided by the family members.

The deceased have been identified as Jaskaran Singh (38) and his younger brother, Jaswinder Singh alias Jora Singh (34), both residents of village Harinau. Both farmers were small landholders. Investigations conducted so far reveal that they took this drastic step due to the crushing burden of debt. Both brothers have left behind their wives, as well as a young daughter each.

A Loan of ₹25 Lakhs That Swelled to ₹50 Lakhs

Jaskaran Singh and Jaswinder Singh—the two farmer brothers in Faridkot who committed suicide due to debt distress—were burdened with a debt amounting to approximately ₹25 lakhs. According to family sources, the total debt figure had previously exceeded ₹50 lakhs; however, just about three months ago, they had managed to clear a portion of the debt by selling off a section of their land.

Tractor Purchased Nine Months Ago; Potato Crop Failed

About nine months ago, the two brothers had also purchased a new tractor, and they had been under considerable stress regarding the payment of its installments. Recently, the failure of their potato crop subjected them to immense mental pressure. They were receiving repeated phone calls from the bank because they were unable to pay the tractor installments. Furthermore, they were distressed by their inability to repay their other outstanding debts. Consequently, they took this fatal step.

Sisters-in-Law Widowed; Family Crushed Under Grief

Both brothers were married to two sisters from the village of Taifi. The elder brother, Jaskaran Singh, is survived by a 6-year-old daughter, while the younger brother, Jaswinder Singh, leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter. Out of eight siblings, they were the two youngest; all six of their sisters are married. Their tragic act has unleashed a mountain of grief upon the entire family. Besides the elderly parents, the household consists of both their wives and a young daughter each.
