Farmers Block Highways in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar for 4.5 Hours Over Water Shortage

Sri Ganganagar: Angry over severe water shortage, farmers blocked two major roads in Sri Ganganagar by parking their tractors in the middle of the highways.

Protests were held at the Fusewala toll plaza on NH-911 (Sri Ganganagar–Raisinghnagar road) and on the Padampur State Highway near the CC Head area.

During the protest, farmers also burnt an effigy of former minister Surendra Pal Singh TT to show their anger.

Water Supply Still Inadequate After Canal Shutdown

The farmers said that even after 32 days of canal closure for repair work on the Ferozepur Feeder in Punjab, they are still not getting enough water. Officials had promised to release 2,600 cusecs of water, but farmers claim they received only about 1,500 cusecs — and not even that much for a single full day.

Crops at Risk If Full Water Not Released

The canal repair work is scheduled to end on February 25. Farmers warned that if full water supply is not released into the Bikaner Canal after that, standing crops in the Ganga Canal region could dry up and be badly damaged.

Protest Called Off, Bigger Agitation Planned

The road blockade began around 11:30 am on Friday and continued for about four and a half hours before being lifted at 4 pm. Farmer groups have now announced a large sit-in protest on February 26 in Sri Ganganagar. Thousands of farmers are expected to gather at Ganga Singh Chowk outside the Collectorate to demand proper water supply.
