Farmers March Towards Chandigarh, Clash With Police at Mohali Border; Tear Gas and Water Cannons Used

Farmers from Punjab reached the Mohali border to march towards Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh and clashed with the police. The farmers are protesting with several demands, including increasing the loan limit and MSP. As a result, traffic on two borders was diverted.

Chandigarh police barricaded and sealed all the borders adjoining Punjab. To stop protesters from crossing by jumping over, the police fired tear gas shells. Even after this, when the farmers did not stop, they were sprayed with water from water cannons.

Chandigarh police stated that the situation is being closely monitored. Senior officers, including the SSP, are keeping an eye on the situation on the ground.

Protests over these demands

New demand on ‘river water’: Farmers are demanding that the distribution of ‘river water’ (river water) be done according to the riparian principle and are demanding the repeal of certain sections of the ‘Punjab Reorganization Act.’
Electricity and agricultural laws: They are protesting against the central government’s proposed ‘Electricity Amendment Bill 2025’ and ‘Seed Law 2025.’
Legal guarantee of MSP: Long-standing pending demands include a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for all crops.
Cooperative loan limits: Farmers are demanding the restoration of loan limits canceled by cooperative societies. They are also demanding full-capacity supply of electricity and canal water during the paddy season.

Diversion on the road to Chandigarh

A diversion has been put on the road to Chandigarh behind the Punjab School Education Board. Traffic has also been diverted at the Mator barrier. Traffic is running normally at all other places and people are not facing any trouble.
