Amritsar:  There is a lot of anger as the price of Basmati rice in the mandis is Rs 1000 less per quintal than last time. Farmers have now started coming out on the roads to voice their discontent with the government and have begun protesting.

In Amritsar, farmers protested by throwing Basmati rice on the roads. Farmers claims that last year when the price of Basmati in the international market was $917/ton, Indian farmers got ₹3500/quintal; today the rate in the international market is $1037/ton, so they are getting 2200/quintal.  Farmers argue that all the profit is being taken by private traders.

Farmers protested against the government on the roads of Amritsar regarding the price of Basmati rice. Farmers had brought sacks of Basmati rice in their vehicles and expressed their anger by throwing rice from the vehicles on the roads. Farmers say that the way the government is paying less price for Basmati this time compared to last year, they are not even able to cover their expenses. The central government is exploiting them and forcing them to commit suicide.
