Farmers in Punjab to protests outside Deputy Commissioner offices today; Read key demands

The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (India) has announced a major protest in Punjab regarding the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, compensation for losses incurred during the Shambhu-Khanauri protest, and other important issues. The organisation has declared that sit-in protests will begin today, December 18th, outside the offices of District Commissioners (DCs) across Punjab. If the government does not heed their demands, a rail blockade will be launched from December 20th.

This information was shared by the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (India). Senior leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that the organisation had submitted a list of demands to the government on December 1st, but has not yet received any concrete response.

Demand to withdraw the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025

Sarwan Singh Pandher explained that the main demand of the farmers and labourers is that the central government immediately repeal the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025. They also demand that the Punjab government pass a resolution against this bill in the state assembly with the consensus of all parties. He demanded an end to the privatisation of the electricity department, the abolition of contract labour, the recruitment of permanent employees, and a halt to the forced installation of prepaid meters.

Opposition to Free Trade Agreements and the Seed Bill

He stated that the zero-tariff agreement with the US and other free trade agreements with other countries are severely impacting farmers, labourers, and the market. The import of cotton, maize, soybeans, and dairy products is harming domestic agriculture. He demanded that all such agreements be immediately cancelled. He also demanded that the draft Seed Bill 2025 be withdrawn and that attempts to hand over seed production to corporate entities be stopped.

Demand for compensation for losses at the Shambhu-Khanauri protest

Pandher alleged that the Punjab government forcibly ended the 14-month-long Kisan Mazdoor Morcha at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders. During this time, leaders were arrested, and tractors, trolleys, and other protest equipment were damaged. He demanded compensation of approximately Rs. 3.77 crore. They demanded that all cases registered during the Delhi farmers’ movement (Farmers’ Movement-1 and Farmers’ Movement-2) and the movements in Punjab be withdrawn immediately. They also demanded that the notices sent by the railway department be cancelled. They further demanded that the families of the farmers who died during the protests be given compensation and jobs, while those injured receive financial assistance.
