Fatehpur Gas Cylinder Blast: Five Killed, Two Nearby Houses Collapse

Uttar Pradesh: Five people have died so far in a gas cylinder blast in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh. The two-storey house of fruit vendor Suresh Gupta in Malwan town collapsed after two cylinders exploded. Suresh and four members of his family died in the incident, while three people were injured.

The incident took place at around 5 p.m. on Monday, about 20 kilometres from the district headquarters. A fire broke out in the house while food was being cooked. The women in the family ran outside screaming. The two filled gas cylinders kept inside the house then exploded with a loud blast.

The blast was so powerful that people in the surrounding area felt an earthquake-like tremor up to about 200 metres away. Two neighbouring houses also collapsed. Fortunately, no one was inside either house at the time of the incident. Ten to 12 other houses in the vicinity were also damaged.

A total of four gas cylinders were kept in the house at the time of the incident. Two were empty and two were filled. According to preliminary information, gas may have leaked from one of the cylinders. However, this has not yet been confirmed. District Fire Officer Jasveer Singh said an investigation was under way to determine which gas agency the cylinders belonged to.

Eight people trapped under the debris pulled out

A team of 16 police and fire brigade personnel reached the spot after being informed. As the house was located in a narrow lane, the fire brigade vehicle could not reach the site. The debris-clearing operation was then begun with the help of bulldozers and JCB machines. With the help of local residents, the police and fire brigade teams pulled eight people out from under the debris and took them to the Medical College.

Suresh’s sons Kunal (19), Ved (14), Yash (8) and Arpit (15) and his nephews died at the medical college. His nephew Alok Gupta (23) succumbed to his injuries at around 9:30 p.m. late at night. He had suffered burns over around 90% of his body. Suresh Gupta (50), his nephew Om (7) and niece Shivani (23) were injured in the incident.

The cylinder regulator and pipe were found lying at the site after the blast.

The cot kept outside Suresh’s neighbour Mahesh’s house was also broken in the blast.

SDRF team arrives from Lucknow

After the accident, an SDRF team arrived at the site from Lucknow late at night. The team helped remove the debris and in the rescue operation. Raised platforms outside several houses were demolished to bring the JCB to the site. It has also emerged that around 15 houses in the vicinity developed cracks due to the blast.

The injured were rescued and taken to hospital.

Two neighbouring houses completely collapsed

In the blast, the houses of Suresh Gupta’s neighbours, Mahesh Singh and Pradeep Singh, also completely collapsed. Meanwhile, the walls of Anmol Singh’s and Roopa Singh’s houses fell. At the time of the accident, the members of Mahesh and Pradeep’s families were outside the houses, averting a major tragedy.

SP Abhimanyu comforted the relatives who were crying after the accident.

Boundary wall collapsed up to 200 metres away

Navin Shukla, a resident of Malwan town, said Suresh Gupta’s house is in a lane about 100 metres from the highway. The blast damaged 10 to 12 houses in the surrounding area. The roofs and concrete slabs of several houses were damaged, while some houses collapsed completely. A boundary wall also collapsed up to 200 metres from the house.

Neighbour Mahesh Singh said the blast was so powerful that it sounded as though a large bomb had exploded. Before people could understand what had happened, Suresh Gupta and his house had been caught in the blast. The area is gripped by panic following the incident. Police, fire brigade and SDRF teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations.
