Fear of ‘unknown plague’ in Russia: Lab worker dies, nearly 200 people under observation

Moscow: Concerns have grown over a possible infectious disease in Russia’s Siberian region. A 28-year-old laboratory worker died after suffering from severe pneumonia. Nearly 200 people who came into contact with her have been placed under medical observation as a precaution.

The case is also in the news because the deceased woman was associated with an anti-plague research center. However, Russian authorities have not yet confirmed whether the woman was infected with plague, and the exact cause of her illness remains unclear.

Lab worker dies after severe pneumonia

According to reports, the laboratory worker developed severe pneumonia and died on October 2. Because she was associated with the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute, there are concerns that she may have been exposed to Yersinia pestis, the bacteria that causes plague.

Nearly 200 people under medical observation

As a precautionary measure, approximately 200 people who came into contact with the woman have been placed under medical observation. According to officials, those under observation are currently asymptomatic, and tests so far have not confirmed plague infection.

Why is there concern about pneumonic plague?

Pneumonic plague is a severe form of plague that affects the lungs. It can spread through respiratory droplets during close contact with an infected person. It can be fatal if left untreated, but timely identification and appropriate antibiotic treatment increase the patient’s chances of recovery.

    Plague outbreak not officially confirmed

Russian health officials have reportedly described the woman’s illness as “pneumonia of unknown cause.” Officials say that tests have also revealed no microorganisms related to the woman’s work.

The case is currently under investigation and there has been no official confirmation of an outbreak of pneumonic plague in the area. Surveillance of potential contacts is being carried out as a precautionary measure while authorities try to determine the actual cause of the illness.
