Sonipat: Surendra Singh, a resident of Baiyanpur village in Sonipat, has proven that age defies all expectations when it comes to passion and hard work. Surendra, who stayed away from sports until about two years ago, has now established himself at the national level.

Inspired by fitness icon Ankit Baiyanpuria, he began playing sports in 2024. In just two years, he surprised everyone by winning over 70 medals at the state and national levels. Recently, at the Khelo India Masters National Games held in Chandigarh, he won gold medals in four different races.

Continued to Work Hard While Working and Farming
Surendra Singh has been working as a pump operator in the Water Supply Department for the past 32 years. Despite his busy schedule, he finds time to practice.

He trains for two hours every morning and evening. Even amidst his job and farming duties, he left no stone unturned in his preparation.

Journey began in the fields, recognition reached national level
In 2024, he began by running in the fields of his village. Gradually, his confidence grew, and he began participating in competitions.

At the Khelo India Masters National Games held in Chandigarh on March 21 and 22, 2026, he performed brilliantly, winning gold medals in the 5 km, 3 km, 1500 m, and 800 m races.

Over 70 medals in two years
Surendra Singh has won over 22 medals at the national level and over 50 at the state level. In total, he has won over 70 medals.

His first major success came on November 25, 2024, when he won a gold medal at the state-level competition held in Panchkula, which gave a new direction to his career.

In 2025, he won five medals each at competitions held in Surat and Alwar, and four at the Khelo India competition held in Delhi.

Made a name without a coach
Surendra achieved this feat without a coach. However, he considers Ankit Baiyapuriya his role model.

He wakes up every morning at 4 a.m. to practice, eats a balanced diet, and runs 5 to 10 kilometers daily.

It’s not age that matters, it’s courage
Surendra says that initially people questioned his age, but today he has answered them all with his hard work.

His achievement has brought joy to his family and village. He received a grand welcome upon his return home, and his department is also preparing to honor him soon.
