Amritsar Rural Police shot dead an accused during an encounter in the Kambo police station area on Tuesday. This marks the fifth encounter by the district police within a week. The action is connected to the investigation into the November 16 murder of a shopkeeper in Pind Dhulka.

Police had been carrying out intensive raids to trace those responsible. A suspect was killed in an encounter on Monday, and today’s incident involved Sukhpreet Singh alias Sukh, a resident of Patiala, who was intercepted while moving through the Kambo area.

When police attempted to stop him at a checkpoint, he opened fire. Officers retaliated, shooting him in the leg before taking him to a hospital, where he died. According to officials, he had supplied weapons and shelter to those behind the shopkeeper’s murder and had arrived today to deliver arms for another planned crime.

Weapon Recovered; Police Warn Strict Action

A pistol was recovered at the scene, which the police say was intended for use in another criminal act. Amritsar DIG Sandeep Goyal stated during a briefing that those trying to disrupt peace and law and order in the rural belt of Amritsar “will not be spared.”

Recent Encounter

On Monday, police engaged in a firefight with two criminals near Raiya Canal. One officer was shot and injured during the exchange. Both criminals were also injured, with one later dying in the hospital.

DIG Sandeep Goyal said the men had opened fire when police attempted to stop their motorcycle based on prior intelligence.

The investigation later confirmed their involvement in the killing of a shopkeeper who had refused to pay extortion money.

Extortion Angle Behind the Murder

The shopkeeper was murdered in Dhulke village in the Baba Bakala constituency. His son, Lakhwinder Singh, reported that earlier the same day, their house had been fired upon, and the family had received a ₹50 lakh extortion demand.

Though the family alerted the police and did not receive further calls, the assailants later shot and killed the shopkeeper.
