‘Maavan-Dhiyan Satkar Yojana’ Launched: ₹1,100 crore transferred to 40 lakh women’s accounts

Today (July 1), ₹1,100 crore was transferred to the accounts of women over the age of 18 in Punjab. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched this initiative from Dhuri, in his home district of Sangrur. Under this scheme, women from the general category received ₹1,000 per month, while women from the Dalit (SC) category received ₹1,500 per month. For the first time, the government disbursed the amount for three months in the first installment.

₹3,000 was deposited into the accounts of general category women, and ₹4,500 into the accounts of SC category women. A woman seated at the gathering received the first notification for the ₹4,500 credit on her mobile phone. CM Mann stated that 40 lakh women had been registered by yesterday.  The funds provided cover the months of July, August, and September.

During the CM’s speech, a woman approached the stage and showed him the message she had received on her phone. The CM took the phone, read the message, and remarked, “₹4,500 have arrived.” The woman then said, “I have four daughters; this will certainly help cover their expenses.”

The CM noted the receipt of ₹4,500 and asked the woman where she was from; she replied that she was from Dhuri. He reiterated that the ₹4,500 had been credited. The woman mentioned that she is a block president. When the CM asked how she intended to use the money, she replied that it would cover the expenses for her four daughters.

Promise fulfilled eight months before the election
During the 2022 elections, the Aam Aadmi Party had promised that, upon forming the government, it would provide ₹1,000 per month to every woman in Punjab over the age of 18. Although the government had delayed implementing this for four years, it is now fulfilling the promise approximately eight months before the 2027 assembly elections. The government had allocated ₹9,300 crore for this purpose in this year’s budget.

Beneficiaries to receive notification 

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann stated that beneficiaries will receive a notification on their mobile phones once the amount is deposited by the bank; for the first time, the funds for the three months of April, May, and June will be transferred into the accounts in a single lump sum. The Chief Minister claims that 97 percent of the women in the state will benefit from this scheme.

Under the scheme, women belonging to the General and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories will receive ₹3,000 for three months, calculated at the rate of ₹1,000 per month. For women belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, ₹4,500 will be transferred to their accounts, calculated at the rate of ₹1,500 per month. Eligible women who are already receiving social security pensions will also benefit from this scheme.

Who are eligible for Maavan Dheeyan Yojna?

According to the government, the scheme’s benefits will be available to women aged 18 years or older who are permanent residents and registered voters of Punjab. It is mandatory for the beneficiary’s bank account to be linked with Aadhaar. The process of opening bank accounts and linking them with Aadhaar is still underway in several districts. The Chief Minister has urged eligible women to complete their registration and all banking-related formalities promptly so that they can receive the scheme’s benefits on time.

The government has clarified that women belonging to families of government employees, government pensioners, and income taxpayers have been excluded from the scope of the scheme.
