Five Children Receive New Hearing Life Under Chief Minister’s Shravan Ashirwad Yojana

Amritsar: A new ray of hope has emerged for children at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital. Five children underwent successful cochlear implant operations under the Chief Minister’s Hearing-Blessing Scheme (Sunan Da Haq Sabda), giving them a new lease on hearing.

    Positive Response and Ongoing Training

According to doctors, all the children have responded very positively to the surgery and are now able to hear sounds. However, they will need special training to develop their speaking abilities, which will begin soon. Gurbaksh Singh, Professor of the Department of Antibiotics at the Farmer Medical College, says that it may take 1 to 3–4 years for complete normal development, but with timely treatment, these children can lead normal lives.

Expensive Treatment Made Free Under Government Scheme

The most significant feature of this scheme is that while the cost of cochlear implants in private hospitals can reach lakhs of rupees, the government is providing the entire treatment free of charge. This includes everything from surgery to rehabilitation, offering significant relief to economically disadvantaged families.

Early Surgery Leads to Better Outcomes

Doctors urge parents to have their child’s hearing tested without delay if they notice any hearing problems. Experts say that surgery performed between 1.5 and 2 years of age yields better results and allows the child to develop like a normal child.

Doctors have also appealed to society to provide timely treatment to such children instead of hiding them, so that they can join the mainstream and contribute to the progress of the country.
