Folk artist killed as resort wall collapses during sandstorm in Jaisalmer

Jaipur: A tragic incident occurred in Rajasthan’s popular tourist destination Sam in Jaisalmer district when a powerful sandstorm led to the collapse of a resort wall during a cultural performance, killing a folk artist and injuring four others.

The incident took place on Monday night while a traditional Rajasthani cultural evening was being held for domestic and international tourists.

Wall Collapses Amid Strong Winds at Heritage Resort

According to reports, intense winds and a sudden sandstorm hit the area, creating panic among performers and tourists at the heritage resort.

A wall located near the performance area reportedly collapsed under the pressure of the storm, burying artists beneath the debris.

During the incident, 27-year-old folk artist Ramzan Khan died on the spot. Two female dancers and two accompanying performers were also seriously injured.

Rescue Efforts Launched at the Scene

Eyewitnesses said the wind speed increased sharply within minutes, causing temporary structures at the resort to shake violently.

As the storm intensified, a wall adjacent to the stage collapsed directly onto the performing artists before anyone could react.

Resort staff and local residents immediately began rescue operations, removing debris to pull out the trapped performers.

Injured Shifted to Hospital After Initial Treatment

The injured artists were first taken to the local health centre in Sam for emergency treatment.

Due to the seriousness of their injuries, doctors later referred them to the District Hospital in Jaisalmer for advanced medical care.

Police and local administration officials also rushed to the site after receiving information about the incident.

Investigation Ordered Into Possible Safety Lapses

The body of Ramzan Khan has been sent to the mortuary, and his family has been informed.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether negligence or poor construction standards contributed to the wall collapse.

Concerns Raised Over Safety at Desert Resorts

The incident has once again raised concerns over safety measures at tent camps and heritage resorts in the Sam region, which attract large numbers of tourists every year.

Local artists and cultural groups have alleged that while many resorts focus on maintaining a “heritage look” for tourism appeal, structural safety and resistance to extreme desert weather conditions are often neglected.

    Shock in Folk Artist Community

The death of Ramzan Khan has sent shockwaves through Rajasthan’s folk artist community, with growing demands for mandatory safety audits of desert resorts to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
