Former AIG Rachhpal Singh arrested for falsely implicating man, send on three-day police remand

Former AIG of Punjab’s Special Task Force (STF) Rachhpal Singh has been arrested. This action has been taken by the Jalandhar Special Task Force (STF). He is currently detained in Amritsar’s Civil Lines, and the police have produced him in court and obtained his remand. The story behind this incident dates back to 2017, although no official has confirmed it yet.

On August 3, 2017, Balwinder Singh of Amritsar was picked up by the STF Amritsar police from the Civil Hospital Patti. He was later charged with possession of heroin. He was found to be carrying 1 kg of heroin. He was also charged with importing heroin from Pakistan. The names of three other accused were included in the case. Later, Balwinder appealed to the High Court for an investigation into the matter.

A supplementary chargesheet was filed against Balwinder

The STF said in its report that another consignment of heroin was buried in the fields of an accused named Bhaur Singh. Following this, the police recovered 4 kg 530 grams of heroin, a pistol, three magazines and 56 cartridges from the field. Later, the police filed a chargesheet against Balwinder Singh, Major Singh and Bhaur Singh in a court in Amritsar. A supplementary chargesheet was filed against Balwinder Singh, which did not mention Gurjant Singh.

Call details and CCTV footage raised suspicion

Balvinder Singh approached the High Court. In November 2019, the High Court directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Bureau of Investigation, Pramod to investigate the matter. After investigation, the DGP submitted Balwinder Singh’s call details, CCTV footage and location data to the High Court in December 2020. The call details and CCTV footage raised questions, and in January 2021, the High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI. Now, the Punjab Police has once again taken action in this case.

1 kg heroin was shown in Balwinder’s name

The investigation revealed that one kg of heroin was recovered from a person named Gurjant Singh alias Sonu. The entire heroin was shown in the name of Balwinder Singh. Gurjant Singh was released. The police fabricated a story to implicate Balwinder Singh.
