Former Haryana Congress MLA Rajpal Bhukhri Dies of Heart Attack at 55 in Yamunanagar

Former Congress MLA from Yamunanagar Rajpal Bhukhri passed away on Monday morning after suffering a heart attack. The 55-year-old leader died shortly after returning from his routine morning walk while preparing to attend a party meeting in Sadhaura.

Suffered chest pain while getting ready for party meeting

According to family members, Rajpal Bhukhri went for his daily morning walk at around 6 am and returned home around 7 am.

He was preparing to attend a meeting with Haryana Congress in-charge Sanjay Dutt in Sadhaura when he suddenly complained of severe chest pain. His family immediately rushed him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead after examination.

His last rites will be performed on Monday afternoon at around 2 pm in his ancestral village, Bhukhri.

Close associate of Kumari Selja, elected MLA in 2009

Rajpal Bhukhri was considered a prominent Dalit leader from Yamunanagar and was a close associate of senior Congress leader Kumari Selja.

Born on May 19, 1971, in Bhukhri village, he entered active politics with the Congress and won the Sadhaura (SC) Assembly constituency seat in 2009.

He secured 47,263 votes in the 2009 Assembly elections and raised issues related to farmers, irrigation, roads, electricity, education and regional development during his tenure as MLA.

    Remained active in Congress politics

Bhukhri contested the 2014 Assembly elections again on a Congress ticket but lost to BJP candidate Balwant Singh.

Despite not holding an electoral post, he remained active in Congress organisation and continued raising public and political issues.

He had also expressed his views on internal party matters, including the cross-voting by Congress MLAs during the 2016 Rajya Sabha elections, calling it a betrayal of the party.

Bhukhri is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
