Chandigarh: The WhatsApp account of former Nirmal Singh, ex-Director General of Police of Haryana, was hacked by cyber fraudsters who then sent messages to his acquaintances asking for money.
While most recipients realised the messages were suspicious, a head constable posted in Ambala fell victim to the scam and transferred Rs 40,000 to the fraudsters.
Following the incident, Singh lodged a complaint, and a case has been registered at the Panchkula Cyber Police Station.
Fraudsters Obtained OTP Through Phone Call
According to Singh, the incident occurred on March 9 around 4 pm when he received a call from an unknown number.
The caller claimed that a parcel had arrived and requested permission to make a call from Singh’s phone to inquire about it. During this process, the fraudster managed to obtain the WhatsApp OTP, which allowed him to activate Singh’s WhatsApp account on another device.
Messages Sent to Contacts Demanding Money
After gaining access to the account, the cyber criminals sent messages to several people in Singh’s contact list asking for urgent financial help.
Most recipients recognised that the language and tone of the messages were unusual and ignored them. However, a head constable from Ambala believed the message and transferred Rs 40,000 to the fraudsters.
Police have now launched an investigation to trace the culprits.
