Former Meghalaya CM Lapang passes away at 91

Meghalaya: Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, one of the state’s most prominent political figures, passed away at a hospital in Shillong on Friday night. He was 91.

A Journey from Humble Beginnings

Born on April 10, 1934, Lapang’s life story is one of perseverance and grit. He began his career as a road labourer and later worked as a school sub-inspector before stepping into politics. In 1972, he was elected to the first Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from Nongpoh as an independent candidate.

Four-Time Chief Minister

Over the decades, Lapang rose through the political ranks, holding several ministerial positions before serving as Chief Minister of Meghalaya on four occasions between 1992 and 2008. His tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen governance, accelerate development, and uphold communal harmony in the state’s coalition-driven political environment.

Statesman and Consensus Builder

Known for his simplicity, humility, and political acumen, Lapang was respected across party lines. Colleagues often remembered his ability to build consensus during turbulent phases of Meghalaya’s politics. Even after retiring from active politics, he remained a revered elder statesman. In 2024, a life-size statue in his honour was unveiled in Ri-Bhoi district, symbolising his enduring legacy.

Tributes Pour In

News of his demise has triggered widespread mourning across the state and region. Leaders from across the political spectrum hailed him as “a leader who never forgot his roots” and “whose journey embodied perseverance, humility, and service.”

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and senior leaders from the Northeast are expected to visit his residence to pay their respects. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family soon.

Lapang leaves behind a political legacy spanning over three decades, remembered for his resilience, dedication, and lifelong commitment to public service. For many in Meghalaya, he will remain an inspiring figure who rose from modest origins to shape the destiny of the hill state.
