Former TMC MLA Sanat Dey Arrested Over Extortion, Post-Poll Violence Allegations

Kolkata: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Naihati, Sanat Dey, was arrested in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district over allegations of extortion, land grabbing and involvement in post-poll violence, police said.

Dey was arrested from Dattapukur and was subsequently taken to Naihati Police Station. He is accused of extortion and illegal land grabbing and also faces allegations related to attacks on BJP workers following the 2021 Assembly elections.

Sanat Dey Arrested From Dattapukur

According to police, Dey had been facing allegations of extortion and illegal land grabbing in the area for some time.

A search operation had earlier been conducted at his residence, but he was not found there. Police subsequently traced and arrested him from Dattapukur.

The former Naihati MLA is expected to be produced before a court as the investigation into the allegations continues.

Allegations Linked to 2021 Post-Poll Violence

Police said Dey also faces allegations of involvement in incidents of post-poll violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.

He has been accused of attacks on BJP workers in the area, along with allegations of extortion and land grabbing. These remain allegations and will be subject to investigation and legal proceedings.

The arrest comes amid renewed political focus on cases involving alleged post-poll violence and criminal activities in West Bengal.

BJP Workers Protest After Arrest

Following Dey’s arrest, BJP workers gathered outside Naihati Police Station and staged a protest.

The arrest has also triggered political reactions, with BJP leaders demanding a detailed investigation into the allegations against the former MLA.

Dey had represented Naihati and was associated with the TMC before losing the seat in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Police are continuing their investigation into the allegations against him, while further legal proceedings are expected to determine the next course of action.
