Four Injured as Container, Tipper Truck Collide on Amritsar-Delhi Highway Near Phagwara

Phagwara: At least four people were injured after a container truck and a gravel-laden tipper collided on the Amritsar-Delhi National Highway near Eastwood Village on Tuesday, causing massive traffic disruption and blocking the Jalandhar-Phagwara stretch for nearly an hour.

The impact of the collision was so severe that several nearby vehicles were also damaged, triggering chaos on one of Punjab’s busiest highway corridors. Long queues of vehicles were reported on both sides of the highway as traffic came to a standstill following the accident.

    Rescue Operation Launched Immediately

Local residents and passersby rushed to the scene soon after the accident and began rescue efforts before emergency services arrived. The injured occupants were pulled out of the damaged vehicles and provided initial assistance.

Police teams reached the spot shortly after receiving information about the crash and coordinated rescue operations. Ambulances transported all four injured persons to the Civil Hospital in Phagwara for medical treatment.

Authorities later used cranes to remove the damaged vehicles from the roadway, allowing traffic movement to gradually return to normal.

    Highway Traffic Severely Affected

The accident led to significant congestion on the National Highway, with commuters facing long delays during peak travel hours. Traffic remained disrupted until police and highway authorities cleared the wreckage and restored vehicular movement.

Officials said several vehicles travelling close to the accident site suffered damage due to the force of the collision, although no additional casualties were reported.

    Driver Fell Asleep, Says Police

According to preliminary investigations, the accident occurred after one of the drivers allegedly fell asleep at the wheel.

Police officer Makhan Singh, who reached the scene from the Phagwara police station, said one of the injured sustained a fractured leg, while three others suffered serious injuries.

“The injured persons were unable to provide details immediately due to the severity of their injuries,” he said.

According to the officer, the vehicle coming from the Ludhiana side crossed the central divider after the driver reportedly dozed off and crashed into a tipper truck travelling from Jalandhar towards Ludhiana.

    Investigation Underway

Police have initiated further investigation into the incident and are recording statements from those involved. Authorities are also examining whether speeding, driver fatigue or other factors contributed to the crash.

Road safety experts have repeatedly highlighted driver fatigue as a major cause of highway accidents, particularly among commercial vehicle operators undertaking long-distance journeys.

The latest accident once again underscores the dangers of drowsy driving and the need for stricter adherence to rest schedules for heavy vehicle drivers on national highways.
