Ludhiana: Eight months after a fraudster posed as a CBI officer and duped a city-based Radiologist of Rs 16 lakh, the cyber team of city police identified the accused and registered an FIR against him.
The accused has been identified as Ravi Sharma of Tabri Ajmer, Rajasthan.
Inspector Jatinder Singh, in-charge, Cyber police station said that a woman, Dr. Sumit Pal of Ludhiana had received a call on December 19, 2023 and the caller posed as CBI officer and accused the woman for smuggling drugs to foreign countries through a parcel.
The accused caller demanded money from her to avoid action.
“The caller claimed that he recovered a parcel containing 60 gm heroin besides clothes and valuables, which was supposed to be sent abroad. He also claimed that he arrested a person named Sanjay Patil who confessed that he deposited Rs 3.5 Crores in my account, which indicates that I was a part of the racket,” she said while adding that the accused asked her to transfer Rs 16 Lakh in a bank account claiming that it is a government department’s account and once the allegations are verified they will return the money. The scared woman rushed to the nearest bank and transferred money into the given account.
However, after depositing the money, she talked to her relatives and friends who told her that she had been duped. The woman then called the accused and asked him to send the money back, however the accused threatened her. Later, she filed a police complaint.
Inspector Jatinder Singh said that during investigation the team has identified the accused and a case under sections 419, 420, 384 of IPC has been registered against the accused at cyber police station. He said that further proceedings have been initiated to nab the accused.
