Punjab Government Announces Free Bus Travel for NEET Re-Exam Candidates

The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has announced free bus travel for students appearing in the NEET-UG re-examination scheduled for June 21. The move aims to ensure that no candidate faces financial or transportation-related difficulties while traveling to their examination centers.

Under the initiative, all NEET-UG re-exam candidates in Punjab will be allowed to travel free of cost on Punjab Roadways buses. Students will only need to show their admit cards to avail themselves of the service.

The decision reflects the state government’s commitment to supporting education and safeguarding the future of young students. The announcement has been widely welcomed by students and parents, who view it as a significant relief ahead of the examination.

Notably, after similar support measures were announced by Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, several other states also introduced free transportation facilities for NEET candidates. Among them is Haryana, where Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced free bus services for students appearing in the examination.

However, Punjab has gone a step further by extending the free travel facility for three days June 20, 21, and 22 whereas some other states have limited the benefit to two days. Speaking on the decision, Chief Minister Mann said that providing free travel is important, but ensuring quality service for passengers is equally essential. He added that public service should not be measured in terms of the number of days it is offered.

The Chief Minister also highlighted that many students from economically weaker backgrounds struggle to afford transportation costs to examination centers. He noted that during a recent interaction with NEET aspirants, Arvind Kejriwal had heard concerns from students regarding travel expenses and logistical challenges. In response, the Punjab government decided to provide free bus transportation for all NEET candidates during the examination period.

For context, the NEET-UG examination was originally conducted on May 3. However, following allegations of irregularities in the examination process, the test was cancelled and a re-examination was subsequently scheduled.

The Punjab government’s initiative is expected to ease the burden on thousands of students and help them reach their examination centers without additional financial stress.
