Ganga Water Level Rises in Varanasi, Ghats Cut Off; Cremations Shift to Higher Ground

Varanasi: The water level of the Ganga continued to rise in Varanasi on Thursday, disrupting normal activities along the riverfront and cutting off connectivity between several ghats as the swollen river entered areas close to the banks.

The rising water has affected stretches from the Ganga Aarti venues to Manikarnika Ghat, one of Varanasi’s major cremation grounds. With water entering areas around the ghats, cremation activities at Manikarnika have reportedly been shifted to rooftops and other higher locations.

The situation has raised concern among residents, pilgrims and people working along the riverfront.

Ganga water level reaches 67.68 metres

According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the Ganga was rising at around 50 millimetres per hour.

The water level had reached 67.68 metres, while the danger mark for the Ganga in Varanasi is 71.26 metres.

The river was therefore around 3.58 metres below the danger mark. However, if the water level continues to rise, low-lying areas along the riverfront could face greater difficulties.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and tracking changes in the river’s water level.

Ghats lose connectivity as water rises

The rising Ganga has submerged several pathways and stretches connecting Varanasi’s ghats, making movement between them difficult.

The impact has also been visible around locations associated with the city’s daily religious and cultural activities. Water has affected arrangements around the sites where the Ganga Aarti is performed.

At Manikarnika Ghat, rising water has affected cremation activities, with operations reportedly being moved to higher locations.

Residents urged to remain cautious

The changing conditions have increased concern among residents, pilgrims and visitors, particularly those living or working near the river and in adjoining low-lying areas.

Authorities are monitoring the river closely as the water level continues to rise. People have been advised to remain cautious around the river and avoid entering flooded areas or approaching submerged stretches.

The situation over the next 24 to 48 hours will depend on the rate at which the Ganga continues to rise. Authorities may intensify precautionary measures in vulnerable areas if the upward trend persists.

The rising water level is particularly significant for Varanasi, where religious activities, tourism and livelihoods are closely connected with the city’s extensive riverfront.
